How to Repair Vintage Metal Bed Frame

Few things are more romantic than a vintage metal bed frame. Whether recent or new, wrought iron beds are sturdy and exquisite, and are available in an exceedingly wide selection of designs and colours. But what if your wrought iron bed starts rusting? Or, do you have parts that are getting loose or areas that have actually broken? What happens if the paint is chipping?

Remove all the screws around the rusted areas, to make the job of removing the oxide easier and more complete. Scrape small areas of rust away by hand, using a fine grade piece of sandpaper or a wire brush. Implement a chemical remover if the bed is old or has decorative details. Hardware stores generally have a selection of these types of rust removers. Repaint the rusted area to yourself by choosing paint products specifically designed for wrought iron.

Apply a primer, followed by two coats of different color. Spray in two layers of acrylic cover for long-term protection. Screw the bed back together and tighten any other loose screws you may encounter. If the screws are badly oxidized, replace them with new screws. Weld all broken pieces of iron. I do not know wrought iron is difficult to weld, so if you have never welded before, hire a professional to do the job. Most welders are used to work with iron auto parts, which are a bit different from wrought iron beds, so look for a welder used to make historical repairs.
